Description

The book describes the author's school boy memories of his time at Flaxton Provisional School in the 1930s and 40s. The author describes the nature of schooling in this era and the fight by the little community to establish the school and reveals its importance as the only public building in the community in becoming the centre of social life; a place of music and laughter, of sadness and tears; where troops were farewelled as they left for war and welcomed on their return home or honoured if they did not. The author includes a detailed account of how back in 1921, twenty-four Flaxton families united in a determined effort to provide a school for the children of Flaxton. The school faithfully served the community until its closure in 1968 around much controversy. 2022 marks 100 years since the little school was established. This book pays tribute to its essential role in the Flaxton community.
